[00:10]chrelad: Just here to say that Trinity Desktop is the bomb. Long time Linux user +25yrs, and I'm now using TDE for my daily driver both personally and professionally. Once I get a new rig, I fully intend to start contributing to the project. Moreover, I'm also planning to get my kids hacking on the code-base. Thanks for making computing fun again.
[00:13]SlavekB: It's great to see new users. And the new contributors are welcome.
[00:15]chrelad: SlavekB For sure. Looking forward to it! My first order of business is getting compiz working for my kids (what a blast from the past) so they can really get jazzed about it.
[00:16]chrelad: ^ That'll probably be in about two months or so. I'll be happy to document the steps and contribute patches if I'm actually able to get it working.
[00:17]chrelad: By the way, happy to report that install via PPA on Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS works great.

[02:18]Necrodiver: i love tde as well. I'm still learning my way through it, but Koffice is so nice and light compared to libreoffice, and konversation has got to be my favorite irc client.
[02:30]chrelad: Necrodiver, +1 to that. Me too, it's been a _long_ time since I've dealt with any of this stuff. It's so fun re-learning it though. I'm surprised how solid everything is, and how well everything still works in 2023.
[02:33]Necrodiver: my literal only complaint is that i cant use Koffice outside of tde, so wish i could
[02:38]chrelad: Necrodiver, right; that's a good point. I wonder if it'd be possible to add another output format, but it just routes the document through pandoc which chooses the output format based on the target extension.
[02:39]Necrodiver: ah. that explains why its so light
[02:40]Necrodiver: i mean libre office isnt bad
[02:40]Necrodiver: but koffice is lighter, and it has the sidebar to keep track of attachments and such. Thats such an amazing idea, i never thought of it before using it
[02:42]chrelad: Necrodiver, very light indeed. KDE had so many great ideas. Glad they are seeing the light of day again with this project.
[02:43]Necrodiver: well tde has been around for quite awhile, and if you want a non-systemD distro that comes with tde, exe/gnu is out there
[02:43]Necrodiver: exe/gnu is just devuan with tde as default
[02:44]Necrodiver: the guy who came up with it used to be a devuan dev and helped fsmithred with refracta back in the day
[02:44]chrelad: Necrodiver, sweet, didn't know about exe/gnu. I'll have to check that out.
[02:44]chrelad: Necrodiver, that's very interesting. I'll have to read up on that.
[02:44]Necrodiver: fsmithred told me himself in the devuan irc channel
[02:45]chrelad: Necrodiver, LOL. I'm liking the non-systemd aspect of the project. Got the site up, and am checking out the details.
[02:46]Necrodiver: when i installed tde, i had been using xfce but when i heard gnome is moving to wayland, im like "nope, fuck this"
[02:46]Necrodiver: lol
[02:46]Necrodiver: my friend told me about tde, i tried it, it has a pretty high learning curve but once i got things set up the way i like, it is just amazing
[02:47]Necrodiver: right now i have lxde and tde installed, and debating on adding i3 just so i can mess with different things
[02:48]Necrodiver: im using lxde right now, i tend to jump between DEs whenever i feel like it
[02:49]Necrodiver: better than distrohopping XD
[02:49]Necrodiver: ive been using tde a lot more since i purged xfce
[02:57]chrelad: Necrodiver, right, I'm not on the wayland band-wagon either (which sucks 'cause I want my hipster iron-on badges LOL). I'll need a very compelling reason to ditch X11. Same here, used to be a giant distro-hopper. Been through pretty much every DE out there, but now I'm looking to settle down with something hack-able, dependable, functional, and
[02:57]chrelad: good looking. TDE definitely fits the bill IMO.
[02:58]Necrodiver: i always preferred tde to xfce anyway, i got te to idle at 360mb of ram, xfce was always between 400-500
[03:01]chrelad: Necrodiver, yesterday was my `apt autoremove` day. Ditched everything except for the Trinity repository with regard to DE/toolkits/apps/libs etc. I hear you re. RAM. No doubt it's way lighter than some of the other DEs. The whole "hardware is cheap" mentality grinds my gears. I want software to be a good steward of my hardware. Looks like there
[03:01]chrelad: might possibly be a couple other contenders for lightest-weight, but the chart is two years old: https://www.reddit.com/r/xfce/comments/kb0d87/i_compared_the_ram_use_of_15_desktop_environments/
[03:02]Necrodiver: xfce 2 years ago was lighter
[03:02]Necrodiver: now its bloated
[03:03]Necrodiver: i even downgraded my xfce back to 4.12 (in devuan terms that would have been beowulf) and it was still a little heavier than tde
[03:03]Necrodiver: i think i got it down to 370 or 380 on idle
[03:04]Necrodiver: but currently, xfce is 4.18

[04:17]Necrodiver: hmmm i update and trinity added a storage device widget to the menu bar
[04:19]chrelad: Necrodiver, nice, just noticed that too. Just gets better and better!
[04:21]Necrodiver: i dunno, i dont unmount things unless its my external hdd, which i dont use that often
[04:28]Necrodiver: hmmm
[04:28]Necrodiver: i installed the suckless-tools package and i wanna give it a keybind, but i cant find the place to do it
[04:30]chrelad: Necrodiver, which specific program are you looking to bind a key for?
[04:30]chrelad: Necrodiver, suckless programs (if memory serves) requires you to modify the source code to add keybinds.
[04:31]Necrodiver: nah, i could do it in lxde without any issue
[04:31]Necrodiver: with the lxhotkey program
[04:31]chrelad: Necrodiver, oh you mean to start dmenu or something?
[04:31]Necrodiver: yeah
[04:31]chrelad: Necrodiver, gotcha. That makes more sense then.
[04:31]Necrodiver: i went into the keyboard shortcuts but couldnt find it
[04:32]chrelad: Necrodiver, right on. Glad you found it!
[04:32]Necrodiver: i didnt find it
[04:33]Necrodiver: thats the problem
[04:33]Necrodiver: lol
[04:33]Necrodiver: i remember having a similar issue with pale moon but i could create a keybind by messing with the properties of the shortcut
[04:33]Necrodiver: dmenu doesnt give me that option
[04:35]chrelad: Necrodiver, Sounds like one for the LXDE bug tracker. Could it be that the Pale Moon interaction was with a *.desktop file and the dmenu interaction was with an executable file? Or, did you create a shortcut to dmenu and then try to modify the shortcut's properties?
[04:36]Necrodiver: i COULD do that, but dmenu isnt supposed to have a .desktop file
[04:36]Necrodiver: so
[04:42]chrelad: Necrodiver, well on the plus side, you didn't have to recompile your WM to add a key-bind. Is there no global Settings -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts sort of menu in LXDE? Haven't used that one for years.
[04:42]Necrodiver: its a special package called lxhotkey
[04:50]chrelad: Necrodiver, hm. Interesting.

[05:39]Necrodiver: testing openbox out with dmenu
[05:39]Necrodiver: and it runs at about the same as lxde and tde
[05:39]Necrodiver: ram wise

[08:14]Necrodiver: so i think tde has a chance to push to the forefront of DEs
[08:14]Necrodiver: xfce is already starting to add wayland crap
